An annual art show to raise funds for supporting and developing a Permanent Art Collection at the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) shall be held in Nairobi October 24-26, 2014.
To this end, Kenya Museum Society (KMS), that supports NMK, invites artists to submit art works to this show by entering two of their best pieces.
“The Kenya Museum Society Art Show is open to paintings, sculptures and mixed media work. Submissions will be juried,” Wendy Karmali, the Coordinator of the show and Lydia Galavu, Contemporary Art Curator at NMK, say.
Karmali and Galavu say the judging of the work submitted to the show for consideration shall be based on the following criteria:
• the piece must be limited to 100cm x 100cm size (paintings and sculpture) to facilitate buyers carrying their work home in their cars;
• the work must be created in 2014;
• all paintings must be framed and ready for exhibiting, and
• all submissions must be priced at no more than Ksh99, 999 (about US$1, 190).
Accepted works will be showcased in a gala opening on October 24, 2014.
But before getting to this point, artists are asked to deliver their work to NMK on October 15, 2014 between 10AM and 3PM.
The organisers appeal to artists from outside Nairobi who send work by public means to ensure the work arrives at NMK no later than Monday, October 13, 2014.
“Selected artwork will be exhibited and sold for the purpose of supporting the National Museums of Kenya. The exhibition will showcase the diversity and richness of the creativity of Kenya’s artists and the funds raised will be used to support and further develop NMK’s Permanent Collection,” Karmali and Galavu say.
Interested artists are invited to confirm their intent to participate at their earliest convenience by writing to firstname.lastname@example.org, giving their name, contacts and the type of work they will submit.
Meanwhile, a joint art exhibition titled Culture and Nature that showcases the work of Peter Mburu and Joseph Muchina opened in the Cultural Dynamism Gallery of NNM on July 7 and runs between 8.30 AM and 5.30 PM till July 31, 2014.
