Kenyan designers invited to Hollywood

Kenya has been invited to the United States of America in December 2006 to participate in a major world fashion event meant for ‘establishing cultural bridges and trade opportunities’, OGOVA ONDEGO reports.
World Fashion Week-World Fashion Awards (WFW-WFA), the hosts, say designers from each country will exhibit their collections, comprising Haute Couture, Pre-a-porter, Swimwear, Lingerie, and Special Wear, for 60 minutes in the country's showroom "to assure the maximum visibility and exposure to buyers, media and guests." WFW-WFA organisers promise to provide exhibitors the latest technology in lighting, sound, video walls and back stage.
The invitation-aimed at recognising designers as individuals and representatives of their countries, cultures and national fashion industries-comes at a time when the fashion sector in Kenya appears to be on its knees due to the onslaught of cheap imported second-hand clothes and 'mass produced' clothes by dressmakers and tailors that is driving designers out of business while the Kenya Fashion Week (2000-2005) has just wound up.
