In a week’s time from today, German national airline, Lufthansa, shall commence direct flights between Nairobi and Frankfurt.
Lufthansa shall on October 25, 2015 begin its three weekly flights on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday using Boeing 737-700 in a two-class configuration offering Lufthansa’s intercontinental Business and Economy Class cabins.
Twelve additional flights are planned for December 2015 and January 2016 due to what travel agents describe as “already exceptionally high bookings using an A340-300.”
Together with its code-share partner, Swiss International Air Lines, Lufthansa shall operate eight weekly flights from Nairobi this Christmas and New Year’s season besides the additional flights in December and January and, it is hoped, shall offer “customers seamless connections to hundreds of destinations around the globe, ” according to its own publicity.
Till now Lufthansa has relied on code-shared flights with partners Swiss Air and SN Brussels Airlines to connect their passengers to Nairobi.
Initially, Lufthansa says, its flight LH 590 will “leave Frankfurt every morning on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays (and on Fridays and Sundays from December 11, 2015, to the end of January 2016) and will reach Nairobi in the evening after a journey of more than eight hours. The return aircraft will take off from Nairobi as a night flight in the late evening and land the morning of the following day at Frankfurt airport.”
The price of a return ticket starts from US$1820, inclusive of fuel surcharge, taxes and service fees, Lufthansa says.
