Diamond Jubilee Hall in Dar es Salaam will on November 5-6, 2008 midwife Swahili Fashion Week as Tanzania launches her first ever fashion week on the theme, Discover what makes Africa Beautiful.

Starting this year as a two-day event, the Swahili Fashion Week will showcase the work of established and up-and-coming designers on the first and second days, respectively. This inaugural event, directed by the renowned South African Jan Malan, will see the Face of Africa Models 2008 strut the ramp ride in Dar es Salaam on November 5, 2008.

The Swahili fashion week is the brainchild of fashion designer Mustafa Hassanali, Tanzania’s well known international fashion designer.

“As one of the premier designers in the country it has always been my vision not only to further my creations in Tanzanian Fashion but also to promote the industry on the whole. Tanzania has so many established and budding talented designers that the Swahili Fashion week was a much needed platform to enhance African fashion eventually placing it on the global map,” Hassanali says.

Hassanali and Roundtrip Events Tanzania are working together to make the Swahili Fashion Week a globally celebrated event scaling greater heights with a view to affiliating it to other international fashion weeks.

Meanwhile, Tanzania is preparing to host the 2008 Travellers’ Philanthropy Conference in Arusha (December 3-5, 2008) at which some 500 delegates are expected to participate.

Held on the theme, ‘Making Travellers’ Philanthropy Work for Development, Business, and Conservation, and with participation drawn mainly from the tourism and environmental conservation fields, the conference will focus on tourism businesses supporting community and conservation projects in the countries in which they operate.

Nobel Peace Laureate, Prof Wangari Maathai, is expected to make the opening keynote speech. The event is organised by the Centre on Eco-tourism and Sustainable Development (CESD) of the United States of America.
