Two Tanzanian fashion designers, Mustafa Hassanali and Ally Rehmtullah, have showcased their creativity in Dar es Salaam and Kigali, respectively.
First on stage on February 7, 2009 was Hassanali who unveiled his bridal wear, Malkia. Budding designer, Edward Musiba, worked alongside Hassanali at Dar’s Little Theatre.Musiba, an A-Level student at Tambaza High School, showcased seven formal and semi-formal outfits for women and men.
Hassanali, who says he designs all kinds of wear, ranging from corporate dress to traditional costumes and Wedding Ensembles, says he is mentoring Musiba, the 2008 winner of the British-Council-supported WAPI (Words and Pictures) Emerging Designer Award.
Asked what makes his style unique, Hassanali says his work is ”renowned for its elegance, style, flamboyancy, glamour and glitz that has made it one of the most sought-after fashion houses in Tanzania.”
Saying he handles ”each piece with great care and gives the utmost attention to whole outfit”, Hassanali reiterates, ”Each design and Outfit is Unique. A duplicate is never created. That is what makes it unique.”
