A six-hour concert to celebrate Cape Town’s rich musical heritage takes place at Community House in Salt River, Cape Town, on September 25, 2010.

In Nairobi, Goethe-Institut and Alliance Francaise are on September 24-26, 2010 hosting
a festival of performance artists dubbed Jukwaani that will feature Kiswahili poetry, music, dance, spoken word, urban music and hip hop battle competition, story-telling and slide shows.

Also in Nairobi, afro-fusion musician Eric Wainaina and Baaba Maal are set to perform at the Sarakasi Dome in Ngara on September 28, 2010. Tickets to the show cost Sh500 per head.

The Cape Town event, dubbed “The Legends Concert” and held in a venue that has  recently been acknowledged as a labour and community heritage site, will also pay tribute to Alex Van Heerden, Winston Mankunku, Robbie Jansen and Ezra Ngcukana, the music icons who have passed on over the past two years.

“The Legends Concert will honour the men and women who have, and continue to contribute to the evolution of the national, cultural landscape with selfless dedication; and serve as a tribute to these and the many other artists who have over the years not only graced us with their beautiful music but have more importantly expressed the joy and anguish of ordinary people, and soothed the national soul,” says a Press Release issued by writer/director/producer Michael Wentworth.

The line up for the night includes Steve Newman and Errol Dyers as the Acoustic String Duet; The Spencer Mbadu Quartet with Bokani Dyer, Bheki Thembi and Carlo Fabe; The Alvin Dyers Trio with Alistair Andrews and Denver Furness; Mark Fransman’s Acoustic Knot with  Heinrich Goosen, Darren English and Nic Williams; and Sons of Table Mountain with Hilton Schilder, Steven Erasmus, Denver Furness and Kyle Shepherd.

Entrance fee is ZAR100 and the first performance begins at six o’clock. A portion of the gate fee will be donated to the Hilton Schilder Trust and there will be a cash bar and food available, the organisers say.
