Rhode Bathe-Scheba Makoumbou, the award-winning, Brussels-based visual artist from Congo Brazzaville who specialises in colourful, rural Africa-inspired paintings and sculptures, continues to exhibit her work around the world.
Though living in Belgium since 2004, Makoumbou is said to return to Brazzaville where she runs a creative workshop every year to ‘find inspiration’ for creating works of art that gives cultural exposure to the Congo across the world.
The works of Makoumbou–who received a “Grand Prix des Arts et des Lettres” award from the President of Congo-Brazzaville in 2012–go on show at the first Katara African Festival, “Katara Beach”, Doha, Qatar (April 7 – 13, 2013) before moving to Store Kabongo, African Design, 11, Immermann Strasse – 40210 Düsseldorf, Germany, June 1 – 8, 2013.
Makoumbou’s works are also set to be displayed at “Lumumba”, a theatrical evening dubbed “The misunderstood understand” and that features Serge Diantatu signings, Room Le Zebre de Belleville. 63, bd. Belleville – 75011 Paris, France (June 29, 2013; French Institute of Congo (IFC), Roundabout Kasai – Pointe-Noire, Congo-Brazzaville (September 19-25, 2013); and Artistica Art Gallery, 7, Mont des Arts – 1000 Brussels, Belgium (November 15 – December 14, 2013).

The 1976-born Makoumbou is set to exhibit in Abidjan (Ivory Coast)Â and Tucson (USA) in 2014, according to her manager, Marc Somville.
Initiated in the creative world by her painter father–David Makoumbou–Rhode Bathe-Scheba Makoumbou is said to have taken up art as a career in 1989. Makoumbou emphasises the domestic chores of women in traditional Africa in her paintings and sculptures.
