A free, open lecture for film practitioners on international distribution of African films shall be held in Nairobi on September 22, 2013 at 2.00PM.
Held in the framework of the fourth annual workshop that has attracted filmmakers from 14 African countries to Nairobi, the lecture shall be delivered by Philipp Hoffmann, the sales agent for films like SOUL BOY, NAIROBI HALF LIFE and SOMETHING NECESSARY that have been realised through Germany’s One Fine Day Films, an independent production company set up by German film director, producer, screenwriter and composer Tom Tykwer and Marie Steinmann and conducts hands-on training from which it realises films in conjunction with Ginger Ink and Goethe-Institut in Kenya.

Besides discussing working formulas in marketing and distribution of films, including addressing issues like ‘exhibition’, ‘theatrical release’, ‘VOD’ and ‘Minimum Guarantee’ that often baffle new film practitioners, Philipp Hoffmann is also expected to share his own experience at the meeting to be held in Makutano conference room of The Heron Hotel on Milimani Road.
Philipp Hoffmann, according to a pre-event publicity by One Fine Day Films, studied Film with specialisation in Production at the Internationale Filmschule in Cologne, Germany. He then worked with several European and American production companies. While serving as Head of Marketing at The Match Factory from 2007, several films distributed by The Match Factory won numerous awards including a Palm D’Or at Cannes International Film Festival in France and two Golden Bears at Germany’s Berlin International Film Festival. Four other films are said to have received Oscar nominations for Best Foreign Film.
Hoffmann set up his own consulting company in 2011 through which he conducts seminars about world sales and distribution represents movies by internationally-renowned filmmakers from all over the world.
