Award-winning painter and sculptor Rhode Bathe-Scheba Makoumbou is holding a sculpture exhibition in Congo-Brazzaville between April and June 2014.
Held in the Museum Gallery of the Congo Basin in Brazzaville April 18-June 14, 2014, this is Makoumbou’s first major solo exhibition in the Congolese capital that comes hot on the heels of her first solo show at French Institute of Pointe-Noire in October 2013.
The artist who took up painting as a career in 1989, uses a knife to create her oil paintings. Her works in the realistic and cubic style are representations of women’s chores in rural Africa. Her sculptures are made from sawdust and wood glue.

“Though based in Belgium since 2004,” Marc Somville, her manager, says, “Makoumbou usually returns to Brazzaville where she runs a creative workshop every year to ‘find inspiration’ for creating works of art that gives cultural exposure to the Congo across the world.”
Apart from Congo Brazzaville, Makoumbou has participated in exhibitions in Gabon, France, Belgium, Niger, Cameroon, United States, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, Germany, Senegal, Morocco, Spain, Luxembourg, Sweden, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Canada and Qatar. Along the way, the creative daughter of a painter father has received a “Grand Prix des Arts et des Lettres” award from the President of Congo-Brazzaville.
