Russia has issued caution to its nationals against visiting Kenya in the runup to the East African country’s general elections slated for August 8, 2017.

A statement issued in the Russian capital, Moscow, by the Russian Federation’s Information and Press Department on August 3 says that “The risk of a terrorist attack by Somali al-Shabaab terrorists persists.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry, Russia says “recommends that any Russian nationals who are planning to visit Kenya soon for tourist purposes need to consider these circumstances and thoroughly weigh the pros and cons of traveling there during this period.”

Kenya goes to the polls on August 8, 2017 in one of the most hotly contested elections this former British colony has ever faced. Raila Odinga, the flagbearer for the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA), shall be seeking to unseat Uhuru Kenyatta, the incumbent President whose Jubilee Government is accused of not doing much in the fight against runaway corruption that many view as being an obstacle to national unity and development.

The latest opinion polls by both Ipsos Synovate and TIFA Research show Odinga ahead of Kenyatta.
