Players in the African arts sector have till August 31 and September 1, 2020 to apply for Black Rock Senegal Artist-in-Residence and Berlinale Talents 2021 programmes, respectively.
The organisers of the Dakar (Senegal)-based Black Rock residency programme created by US American visual artist Kehinde Wiley say the objective of the multi-disciplinary initiative is to ‘incite change in the global discourse around West Africa in the context of creative evolution’. “In light of circumstances related to COVID-19, we anticipate welcoming our Year 2 class of residents in Autumn 2020, however further information will be made available as we know more about international travel and health recommendations,” the organisers say. “Residents will be offered room, board, and individual studio space. Black Rock provides residents with a local staff to assist in navigating Dakar and a language tutor to assist with English, French, and Wolof –the three primary languages of the programme. Residents will additionally be offered a modest stipend for incidentals and additional art supplies. Black Rock will provide funding for travel within Senegal organized through the residency program and for individually-organized travel on a case-by-case basis. While Black Rock does not provide funding for travel to and from Senegal, we are happy to assist in securing third-party funding opportunities and travel grants. Black Rock will consider applicants equally irregardless of their abilities to cover such costs. Residents must be over 18 years old. Residents must have a valid passport for international travel if they currently reside outside of Senegal.”
All applications for the Black Rock Senegal Artist-in-Residence must be submitted via the blackrocksenegal.org website.
