Sunday, 13th November 2022 has gone down in history as the day 113 triathletes stood on the white sandy beaches of Diani for 113 Shujaa Triathlon, Kenya’s first middle distance triathlon.
Set against the backdrop of clear blue waters for the swim, open roads for the bike and run, the 113 Shujaa Triathlon was a true test of speed, endurance and mental grit. Open to triathletes of all levels, the event saw individuals tackle the following events:
- Middle Distance – Swim 1.5KM, Cycle 90KM, Run 21.5KM
- Olympic Distance – Swim 1.5KM, Cycle 40KM, Run 10.5KM
- Sprint Distance – Swim 750M, Cycle 20KM, Run 5KM

The Sprint Distance saw 57 participants take on a 750m swim, 20KM cycle and 5KM run with top honours going to Vivian Hillier – 1hr 30min in first position, Caroline Wong – 1hr 39min taking second position and Deeya Shah – 1hr 46min in third position in the women’s category.
Among the men, James Wallaula – 1hr 37min came in first followed by Ridhwan Hussein – 1hr 41min and Robert Noome – 1hr 42min, respectively.
In the Team Relay Challenge, First Position was taken by Team Ali Doctor – 1hr 21min, Second Position by Last Man Standing – 2hr 5min and Third Position by Penny Pinchers – 2hrs 11min
In the Olympic Triathlon, 27 triathletes took on a 1.5KM Swim, 40KM Bike Ride and 10.7KM Run with the first position going to Samir Ibrahim – 3hrs 23min; second to Victor Huria – 3hrs 25min and third to Phillipp Gutsche – 3hrs 29min among the men.
In the women’s category, first position was taken by Rita Zagoni – 3hrs 28min, Second to Harriet Bell – 3hrs 30min and third to Rebecca Crook – 3hrs 36min.
For the Team Relay Challenge Kwang Kwang with Eric, George and Newton completed the race in 3hrs 47min.

In the Middle Distance triathlon, triathletes took on a 1.5KM Swim, 90KM Bike Ride and 21.5KM run, with the following individuals taking up top honours; First Position – Tim Britten – 6hrs 2min, Second Position – Jimmy Dukes – 6hrs 8min and Third Position – Luuk Brakel – 6hrs 13min. For the ladies, First Position was taken by Berber Kramer – 5hrs 25min, Second Position – Erin Tyburski – 7hrs 40min and Third Position – Cecilia Still – 8hrs 41min.
Cruising to a finish on the white sandy beach of Nomads Restaurant, the event was capped off with an amazing award ceremony where participants, partners and supporters came together to celebrate the wins of the day.
