On this day of joy, the 2022nd Birthday of Jesus Christ, we share ‘The Gentile Messiah’, a poem taken from Stories from Life anthology of prose, poetry and drama:
After having waited for four millenia
They had forgotten his identity
Some looked for a priestly messiah
Some looked for a political deliverer
Some thought he would be a prince
Some thought he would be a pre-existing supernatural judge
BUT
The majority thought his origin would be unknown
When he did come they rejected him
For what messiah could come from Nazareth? Be born in a Bethlehem cave?
Be visited and honoured by the despised shepherds?
Could anything good come from “Galilee of the Gentiles”?
YES
God had chosen to shame the world’s ‘wise’ and ‘mighty’
By using what they considered foolish, despicable, and worthless
Jesus Christ was born to an adolescent peasant girl
In a West-occupied Third World
Humanity had anxiously waited for him
Only to snub him when he did come.
