Lightning is a naturally occurring phenomenon that kills people and animals and destroys property.1). Kenya, that’s at risk of lightning whenever it rains, is divided into high risk, medium risk and low risk zones according to the flash densities of this ‘act of God ‘
i). The high-risk region covers western Kenya that comprises the area previously known as Nyanza and Western and parts of Rift Valley provinces
ii). The medium risk zone encompasses south and central Rift Valley and Nairobi and Central provinces
iii). North-Eastern and Coast provinces and north Rift Valley fall under the low risk areas
2). Although lightning is a work of God, you nevertheless can lessen the risk of becoming its victim through knowledge and preparation 3). Structural protection is highly recommended for properties in high-risk regions across Kenya,4). The Kenya Standard Code of Practice for the Protection of Structures Against Lightning stipulates that all public buildings such as schools, churches, hospitals, commercial buildings in the high risk areas be fitted with anti-lightning devices
5). Consider installing certified Lightning Arrestor Systems to safely divert strikes to the ground
6). Equip your home or office with Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) to absorb excess voltage and protect your electrical systems

ii). Never shelter under isolated trees
iii). Avoid all bodies of water
iv). Disconnect electrical appliances to prevent surge damage
v). Do not shower, bathe or wash dishes during a storm, as lightning can conduct through metal pipes
