Human Rights Watch is expected to launch a report documenting police torture against Somali and Ethiopian refugees, asylum seekers, and Somali Kenyans in Nairobi’s Eastleigh suburb in late 2012 and early 2013 in Nairobi on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at 10:00 a.m.
Human Rights Watch says the report, You are All Terrorists: Kenyan Police Abuse of Refugees in Nairobi, catalogues how ‘police from the General Service Unit, Regular Police, Administration Police and Criminal Investigations Department went on a 10 week rampage and raped, …assaulted, stole and extorted from, and arbitrarily detained at least 1,000 people, beginning a day after an attack by unknown persons on a minibus in Eastleigh on November 18, 2012’.

Besides presenting the findings of the report, Human Rights Watch says it will “discuss the urgent need for an investigation into torture and other police abuse in Eastleigh and for the United Nations refugee agency, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), to publicly speak out about such abuses and better document future abuses”.
