Fashion designer Mustafa Hassanali of Tanzania has launched a collection to commemorate 50 years of the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
Aptly called Muungano (Union in Kiswahili), Hassanali says “the collection is inspired by the fusion of various shades of brown that is synonymous with the colour of the sand from Tanganyika and Zanzibar that President Julius Nyerere mixed to symbolise the formation of the United Republic of Tanzania in 1964.”
Saying that Moscow, where he launched Muungano—Khanga fabric of various hues that brings out what he refers to as “sophistication, simplicity and glamour,””Hassanali says the Russian capital, Moscow, was his 27th City and Russia his 18th Country in which he has showcased his work.
The event that Hassanali says was hosted by the Embassy of Tanzania in Russia was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Tanzania on Tanzania Day.
