The Lola Kenya Screen audiovisual media initiative for children and youth has announced the line-up of 171 films to be showcased in its four categories:Competition, World Panorama, Special Focus, and Special Screening. This follows the successful completion of the rating of the selected films by the Kenya Film Censorship Board on Friday, July 27, 2007. OGOVA ONDEGO reports.

Running August 6-11, 2007 at Goethe-Institut in Nairobi CBD, the theme of the second Lola Kenya Screen is ‘Championing democracy, independent thought, gender equity and literacy through film’.

Lola Kenya Screen, that believes that childhood and youth should be treated respectfully and seriously, received more than 260 films from 46 nations from which several gems were selected for exhibition. The films to be showcased tackle contemporary issues ranging from suicide bombing, corruption to child sexual abuse, and from commercialised education to the challenges of winning and keeping friends.

Also running concurrently with film screening will be “African and Scandinavian Creation Myths” animation film production workshop for children (10-15 years) and ‘Producing TV Drama for Children’ and Youth for youth (19-25 years). The workshops will be facilitated by Annemette Karpen and Maikki Kantola of Project ANIMA (Denmark) and Susanne Rieschel of ZDF (Germany), respectively.
