The third annual Swahili Fashion Week ended with pomp and pageantry at Dar es Salaam’s Karimjee Gardens. The event brought together 24 designers from Kiswahili-speaking countries to showcase their creativity in designing a variety of clothing with an assortment of materials and accessories.
“In addition to showcasing established designers, this year’s Swahili Fashion Week’s aim was to give recognition to models and emerging designers by acknowledging their hard work, dedication and commitment to the fashion industry,” said Mustafa Hassanali, founder and organiser of the event.
Art n Frame by Muzu Sulemanjee won the Best Stand as Isabel Radick, wearing Kikoromeo ensemble, was declared the winner of the Southern Sun’s Best Dressed Guest Award.

Subira Wahure pipped Zarina suleiman and Grace kijo to the second and third places, respectively, for the Emerging Designer’s competition.
“Swahili Fashion week is a platform for designers – both fashion and accessory – from Swahili speaking countries to showcase their creativity, market their art and network with their clientele. This is all aimed at promoting fashion as an income generating industry while emphasising a ‘Made in East Africa’ concept,” said Hassanali. “Initiating a dynamic and promising platform for the fashion industry in the region, Swahili Fashion Week is geared towards being the most sought out fashion platform in Eastern Africa for the international market.”.
