In what would appear like a West African domination of African football, Ghanians Asamoah Gyan and Andre ‘Dede’ Ayew, Ivorians Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure and Cameroonian Samuel Eto’o have been short-listed for the 2010 edition of the BBC African Footballer of the Year. Conspicuously missing are eastern, central, southern and northern African players.
The short-listing was announced on Fast Track, the BBC World Service’s flagship African sports programme on November 15, 2010.
Football fans can vote online at bbc.com/africanfootball and by SMS to 447786 200 070, by texting 1 for Asamoah Gyan, 2 for Andre ‘Dede’ Ayew; 3 for Samuel Eto’o; 4 for Yaya Toure; and 5 for Didier Drogba.The five finalists play for various European teams:
Gyan (Sunderland), Ayew (Marseille), Eto’o (Inter Milan), Toure (Manchester City) and Drogba (Chelsea).

“This has been an amazing year for African football, and it is great to see some of the stars of the World Cup in South Africa making the shortlist. I can’t wait to see who the fans choose as the best of the best,” said Farayi Mungazi,, the Zimbabwean host of Fast Track in a Press Release.
The public voting, that runs between November 15 and December 10, will culminate in the announcement of the BBC African Footballer of the Year 2010 on December 17, 2010.
