fashion week zanzibar 2013Wearing African-inspired designs and tanzanite jewelry décor, 10 models strutted down the catwalk to taraab music displaying beautifully created outfits. Tiny collars appeared for shirts, blouses, dresses and gowns; piping was subtle, but extended shoulders added a contemporary touch to it. Fresh, flirty and flamboyant with a touch of innocence is how one would have described it.

Participating designers–Farouque Abdela, Adam, MAGO East Africa, Waiz Houston Shelukindo, Kihag, Upendo, Maskat De haan and Rizwan–had kept their pieces simple, only adding glamour to them by incorporating kanga, kitenge, trims, tassels, braiding, weaves and sequins in the Mtoni Palace Ruins.

The event was Fashion Week Zanzibar 2013 and was held at Mtoni Palace Ruins on June 28, 2013.

Rather than promoting the unattainable, this fashion show was all about accessibility without sacrificing style.

fashionistas1The designers based their range on the flow of sand dunes and regal motifs inspired by the wondrous, mysterious and enchanting land of Africa.

Before the show, guests enjoyed an evening reception of wine-tasting and Swahili buffet dinner.

Tickets to the show included wine-tasting and food.
