YELLOW FEVER, a short experimental film on African skin bleaching written, directed and edited by Ngendo Mukii of Kenya has emerged third in the second edition of a Nigeria-based digital filmmaking competition.
“The jury short-listed 20 entries based on concept and execution, i.e. the story’s originality and imaginative force, clarity of purpose and its ability to captivate as well as how effectively the filmmaker reflected technical knowledge of acting, editing, sound, lighting, and camera work,” according to Shadow and Act.
Out of more than 400 entries received from African filmmakers from 16 countries that were pruned to 10 in each of the two categories—fiction, documentary—Mukii’s graduation experimental work that combines fiction, documentary and animation styles emerged third in the Documentary section of the 2nd MTN Afrinolly Short Film Competition. It received a US$5,000 cash prize.
Online voting by members of the public across Africa ran for 12 days for viewers to choose their favourite Short Film and Documentary.
The awards presentation ceremony’a ‘by invitation only’ event to celebrate the generation of digital filmmakers in Africa—on the theme, Lions Rising is scheduled for February 22, 2014 in Lagos, Nigeria.
All finalists in both categories will receive US$500 each.

Third Prize (US$5,000): 10:10 by Gbenga Salu
b). Documentary
First Prize (US$25,000): CREATIVE MINDS by Victor Okoye
Second Prize (US$10,000): AWELE’S DIARY by Ronke Ogunmakin
Third Prize (US$5,000): YELLOW FEVER by Ng’endo Mukii
