There are many businesses you could start as a newbie. However if you have a passion for metal and you want to work with it as a proper business, this could be the area to look into in detail.
Have you ever heard of people turning a much loved hobby into a career? Of course you have; we’ve all heard stories of people who have done just that. While some of them are photographers and others are writers, still many more are passionate about cooking or a craft of some kind. You don’t tend to hear as much about metalworkers but they are out there and some have created very successful businesses too.
Metal is used for a multitude of things. For example, it is used in areas as diverse as shipbuilding and small garden decorations. It’s unlikely that you would try and set up a business building ships of any size; so you will probably veer more towards the latter example.

Chances are if you are reading this you already have an interest in creating a business in metalworking. You may already have carved out a hobby in the area and now you are considering making the transition into a professional business. Many others have done so and made a successful transition – why shouldn’t you do the same?
If you have decided this is the path you will take, it makes sense to start planning. Is this a business you will build around a full or part time job to ensure you still have an income while you are building up a customer list? Perhaps you are thinking about diving straight in; some people are made redundant with a nice payout and use it to set up a new business. This could apply to you. If it does you might be surprised at the results.
One area you will need to think about is where you will work. You will need a workshop; indeed you might already have one. Otherwise you may have to move out of your garage and into a proper workshop with more room for all the metal working equipment you will need to get the work done. There is nothing worse than trying to cram everything into a small space.
Metal working equipment aside though, you will also have to consider where you will find your customers. If you already make items from metal you have to determine whether there is a market for them – and where it is. You might sell items through local shops on commission, or else go to markets and set up a stall there. There are many other options too, such as selling online or through newspaper ads. If you opt for selling online you need to consider how you would send out the orders and whether you would take commissions.

There is a lot to consider here but make no mistake there are a lot of opportunities that exist too. If you are eager enough to seriously consider working with metal as a viable business, you will undoubtedly find a way for it to work. Providing you plan ahead and you know what you want to achieve, there is no reason why you cannot find a route to success.
