As the world marks International Women’s Month in March 2017, Nairobians have several creative activities in honour of their women.
While Alliance Francaise has talks and launches, Nairobi National Museum (NNM) has an art exhibition while Samburu National Park invites the traveller to celebrate the woman while sampling its sights and sounds of nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Kicking off the activities on March 7 is Kike Talks at Alliance Française on the theme, Be Bold for Change. The event starts at 6:00 PM and is held on the premise that “Every person can play a part in helping drive better outcomes for women” and in being “responsive and responsible in creating a more gender inclusive world.”
Come March 9, Alliance Française shall host what it calls the Nairobi Side Hustle Launch Party, an event aimed at launching an online news magazine for and about Nairobi City. This is a “general interest magazine that aims to celebrate the city and tell the stories of its people, with articles presented by a diverse pool of writers and photographers. It goes deep into the lives of Nairobians.”

Keeping in line with the International Women’s Month, the Nairobi Side Hustle Launch Party is expected to feature a project dubbed Femme Electric that is said to be working towards boosting female DJs, producers and musicians. Femme Electric is the initiative of an organisation known as Santuri Safari.
Butterflies, an art exhibition crafted around the daily lives of girls and described as an eventful passage of social, intellectual, physical and spiritual life, runs through March 25 at NNM on Museum Hill.
It features recent work by Jeffie Magina, a young artist known for what the curator of the expo describes as “his imaginative compositions and intriguing characters that stem from personal experiences.”

Magina, whose past shows include Affordable Art Show (NNM, October 2016); Childhood Nostalgia 2 (Talisman Restaurant, June 2016); and Childhood Nostalgia 1 (Little Art Gallery, February 2016), is said to impress upon his viewers the innocence and freedom of his young female subjects.
The 1987-born Magina is a full-time artist who attributes the spontaneous quality of his artwork to childhood experiences. He is currently based at the Go Down Arts Centre in Nairobi.
Then comes the getaway package to Samburu.
