Experimental moviemaker Ng’endo Mukii of Kenya has been selected for an international artist residency programme in Spain.
Mukii, who is best known for YELLOW FEVER, her student film that uses animation, documentary and fictional styles to look at the obsession of black women for light skins and caucasian hair at any cost, has been selected from among 28 shortlisted candidates. She shall undertake her Artists in Residency (AIR) programme at Jiwar in the Spanish city of Barcelona.

Cape Town (South Africa)-based Africa Centre that receives applications and shortlists candidates for the Artists in Residency (AIR) programme on behalf its partners, says it received more than “350 applications across artistic disciplines” on behalf of its residency partners in 2017.

Other visual artists who have been selected besides Mukii include Aida Muluneh of Ethiopia (Instituto Sacatar, Itaparica Island, Bahia, Brazil); Modupeola Olufunke Fadugba of Nigeria (International Studio & Curatorial Programme Centre, Brooklyn, New York City, USA); filmmaker Mohamed Altoum of Sudan (Bundanon Trust, New South Wales, Australia); and Shatha Al-deghady of Egypt (Fountainhead, Miami, Florida, USA).

“Over the next two weeks, we will be revealing more about
these artists, including their residency proposals,” Africa Centre says. “Artists selected for residencies at The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center will be announced in April/May 2018.”
