swahili fashion week call for designersAs build up to the annual Swahili Fashion Week and Awards, a pop up shop was held in the country’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, on June 2, 2018.

The free public event, that started at noon, was hosted by Roberto Mengoni, the Ambassador of Italy to Tanzania in his residence.

As build up to the annual Swahili Fashion Week, a pop up shop was held in the country's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, on June 2, 2018.The work of 25 artists and fashion and accessories designers, according to Mustafa Hassanali, Tanzania’s best known fashion designer who also doubles up as founder and director of what is touted as being the largest annual platform for fashion designers from Kiswahili-speaking countries in East and Central Africa were on display and on sale.

“Entry was free and open to the general public to view and buy art, craft, garments and accessories made in Tanzania,” Hassanali says.

Meanwhile in neighbouring Kenya, artists from Ngecha, a village famous for producing painters, are displaying their work at Nairobi National Museum in the capital June 2 – 30, 2018 as another art exhibition titled Passion, is set to open at Fort Jesus Museum on the Indian Ocean island city of Mombasa. The shows, that is scheduled to run between June 7 and July 31, shall feature the work of Patrick Adoyo Milenye, a former head of Exhibits Department at National Museums of Kenya.
