An exhibition of paintings of people bathing in the Indian Ocean opens in Nairobi on January 10, 2014.
The exhibition, Pirate Beach Bathers, shall run at Kuona Trust’s Centre for Visual Arts on Nairobi’s Dennis Pritt Road, January 10-14, 2014 and shall showcase the work of Mathias Muehle chronicling weekend activities of everyday Kenyans at the coast, particularly the Indian Ocean bathers at Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach, commonly known as ‘Pirate Beach’, in Mombasa. The paintings portray the people in carefree and relaxed atmosphere.
“The beach bather paintings,” Kuona Trust says in a media statement, “are also reminiscent of bathers by impressionist and expressionist French and German artists of the late 19th and early 20th century, like Max Liebermann or Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.”
Mathias Muehle’s vibrant, engaging colours reflect the natural exuberance of the people, and the beauty of the equatorial seaside city.
Entry to the exhibition that opens on January 10 at 6.00PM is free.
